Learn the step-by-step process to install and run a 600L/H hang-on external filter for your aquarium. Avoid common mistakes and get clear water fast.
Quick answer
To set up a 600L/H hang-on external filter, mount it on the tank rim, attach the intake and surface skimmer, fill the chamber with media, and prime the pump before plugging it in.
Why choose a hang-on external filter
Unlike submerged internal filters, a hang-on external filter sits outside the tank and pulls water up through an intake tube. This design lets you access the media without reaching into the aquarium, and it can skim surface film that internal filters miss. The 600 L/H model suits tanks up to 120 litres and works in both fresh and salt water.
Step-by-step setup
- Mount the filter body: Hang the filter on the back rim of the aquarium. Adjust the mounting bracket so the filter sits level and the intake tube reaches at least 2-3 cm below the water surface. Check that the filter does not tilt; an uneven mount can cause vibration and noise.
- Choose and attach the intake: Use the standard intake for normal operation. If you see surface film or floating debris, swap to the supplied surface skimmer attachment. Push the intake tube firmly into the filter inlet. The skimmer draws water from the very top layer; do not use it if your water level drops too low.
- Fill the filter chamber with media: Rinse all media pads under dechlorinated water to remove dust. Stack them in the chamber in the order recommended by the manufacturer (typically coarse foam first, then fine media). Do not overpack – media should fit without bulging. Overpacking restricts water flow and forces the pump to work harder.
- Prime the filter: Fill the filter chamber with aquarium water until it overflows slightly. This removes air from the pump housing. Replace the lid and make sure it clicks shut. Skipping priming causes the pump to run dry and may damage the impeller.
- Start the pump and check for leaks: Plug in the filter and watch the water flow. Check all connections – intake, outlet, and lid seal – for drips. Adjust the flow control dial if your model has one. A small air leak often shows as intermittent bubbling from the outlet; tighten connections or lower the intake deeper.
- Monitor and adjust after 24 hours: Let the filter run for a full day. Re-check water level, flow rate, and any noise. Clean the intake pre-filter or skimmer weekly to prevent clogging. If the filter stops drawing water after a day, the intake may be blocked or the water level may have dropped below the intake.
Product facts
- AllPondSolutions 600L/H Hang-on External Filter: Ships with a surface skimmer attachment as well as its standard intake. You can switch to the skimmer to remove oily film and floating debris that a submerged filter never reaches, improving water clarity and gas exchange.
