Learn how to measure your dog and pick the perfect size Alfie oval dog bed for their sleeping style, with tips for small, medium, and large breeds.
Quick answer
Choose the Alfie oval dog bed size that matches your dog's length from nose to tail base, plus 4–6 inches for a snug, cocooned fit. The high sides suit dogs who curl up, but the lowered front makes entry easy for smaller or older dogs.
Why size matters for an oval bed
Oval beds like the Alfie are designed to wrap around a curled-up dog, providing a sense of security. If the bed is too large, your dog won't feel the support of the raised sides. Too small, and they can't stretch out comfortably. Getting the right size ensures the bed does its job.
Trade-offs in sizing
A snug fit is ideal for dogs who like to curl, but if your dog prefers to sprawl, an oval bed may feel restrictive. For sprawlers, consider a rectangular or square bed instead. Also, the Alfie bed's high sides may be too tall for very short-legged dogs, though the lowered front helps.
How to pick the right size
- Measure your dog's length: Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail while your dog is standing. Add 4–6 inches to find the minimum bed length.
- Match length to bed size: Alfie beds come in S, M, L. A small fits dogs up to about 20 inches long, medium up to 28 inches, and large up to 36 inches. Check the product dimensions for exact fit.
- Consider sleeping style: If your dog curls tightly, choose the smaller end of the range. If they stretch out slightly, go larger. The high sides work best when the dog fits snugly inside. For dogs who sprawl, a rectangular bed may be more comfortable.
