Set up the AllPondSolutions EF-150 on a small tank without leaks or air locks. Follow these steps for hose routing, media layering, and safe priming.
Quick answer
Set up the AllPondSolutions EF-150 by mounting it below tank water level, connecting the hoses with the intake strainer and spray bar, layering the foams, floss, and bio balls as supplied, then priming the canister before you switch it on. Check every hose connection for a tight seal before filling the tank.
Why small tanks need an external filter
Aquariums up to 150L often fall into a gap: an internal filter takes up swimming space and may not hold enough media, while a full-sized canister is oversized and can create too much flow. The EF-150 is designed for that middle ground, sitting outside the tank and running multi-stage filtration without cluttering the inside.
The trade-off is that an external filter adds hose routing and priming steps that an internal filter does not. Plan for space below the tank and a safe path for the hoses before you start.
Media order matters more than media volume
The EF-150 uses three coarse foams of different grades, then a filter floss pad, then bio balls. Keep that order: the foams trap larger debris first, the floss catches fine particles, and the bio balls provide surface area for beneficial bacteria. Packing media too tightly or rearranging the layers can reduce flow and make the filter less effective.
Rinse new media in tank water or dechlorinated water before use. Do not rinse it under tap water, which can harm the bacteria you are trying to establish.
EF-150 setup steps
- Position the canister below tank water level: Place the EF-150 on a stable surface below the tank so gravity feeds the intake and the filter can prime properly. Keep it accessible for future maintenance. If the canister sits above the water line, priming will be difficult and the filter may not start.
- Connect the intake and spray bar: Fit the intake strainer inside the tank and the spray bar near the water surface, then attach the hoses to the canister using the supplied fittings. Hand-tighten only. Check that the intake strainer is not buried in substrate, which can block flow.
- Route hoses without kinks: Run the hoses with gentle curves and secure them so they cannot pull loose. Avoid loops that trap air. A kinked hose reduces flow and makes the filter sound noisy; straighten any bends before priming.
- Load media in the supplied order: Place the three coarse foams first, then the filter floss pad, then the bio balls. Do not compress the media. If you add extra media, keep the layers in the same sequence and leave space for water flow.
- Prime the canister before switching on: Fill the canister with tank water, reconnect the hoses, and use the priming method described in the filter instructions until water flows. Then plug in the filter. Never run the filter dry; if water does not flow after several priming attempts, check hose connections and the intake for blockages.
- Check for leaks and flow: After starting, inspect all connections for drips and confirm the spray bar is moving water. Let it run for an hour and check again. A small leak at a hose fitting often means the connection needs another quarter turn; do not overtighten.
Product facts
- AllPondSolutions 400L/H Aquarium External Filter EF-150: Compact 400L/h external filter for aquariums up to 150L. It fits tanks that are too big for an internal filter but too small for a full-sized canister.

AllPondSolutions 400L/H Aquarium External Filter EF-150 - AllPondSolutions 400L/H Aquarium External Filter EF-150: Three coarse foams of different grades, a filter floss pad, and bio balls provide mechanical and biological filtration.
