Alfie Oval Dog Bed vs Standard Round Bed for Small Dogs

Quick answer

For small dogs that love to curl up, the Alfie oval dog bed offers a snug, cocooned feel that a standard round bed may not match. Choose the oval if your dog seeks security; choose a round bed if they prefer to stretch out.

Why shape matters for small dogs

Small dogs often have specific sleeping habits. Some curl into a tight ball to feel secure, while others sprawl out to cool down. The shape of the bed can influence how well your dog sleeps and how comfortable they feel.

An oval bed with high, structured sides creates a natural nest-like enclosure. This can help reduce anxiety and provide a sense of safety, especially for breeds that like to burrow. A standard round bed, while also cozy, may have lower sides and a more open center, which suits dogs that prefer to stretch out.

The trade-off: snug vs. spacious

The main trade-off between an oval and a round bed is the level of enclosure. The oval's high sides curve around your dog, offering a cocooned experience. This is great for dogs that want to hide away, but it might feel too confining for a dog that likes to sleep with their legs extended.

Round beds often provide a more open sleeping area. They can be easier for dogs to flop into and out of, but they may not offer the same sense of protection. Consider your dog's personality and how they typically sleep when making your choice.

Ease of access for older or smaller dogs

The Alfie oval bed features a lowered front, making it easier for smaller and older dogs to step in without having to climb over a high edge. This is a key advantage over many standard round beds, which may have a uniform high rim all the way around.

If your dog has joint issues or is a tiny breed, the lowered entry can reduce strain on their legs and make getting in and out of the bed more comfortable. This design detail can be a deciding factor for senior dogs.

Choosing between oval and round: the trade-off

• If your dog curls up: Choose the Alfie oval bed. Its high, curved sides provide the secure, nest-like feel that curling dogs love. Look for the oval shape to maximize comfort for this sleeping style.
• If your dog stretches out: A standard round bed with a more open center may be a better fit. The oval's high sides could feel restrictive to a sprawler. Consider your dog's typical sleeping position before buying.
• If your dog is older or has mobility issues: The Alfie oval bed's lowered front makes it easier for them to step in and out compared to beds with a full high rim. Prioritize easy access for senior or small dogs.
